Project 1-3: Inspect for Insecure Versions of Applications Using Secunia Software Inspector

Objectives:
It is critical that security updates be applied in order that computer systems remain secure. Unpatched application software programs are increasingly becoming the target of attackers. Although Microsoft has developed a process through which users are notified of security updates each month, most other software vendors do not have this feature and many applications are unpatched.

Reflections:
This hands-on project introduces Secunia Online Software Inspector to check for soft ware in our system that needs to be updated. As mentioned in the objectives,” It is critical that security updates be applied in order that computer systems remain secure. Unpatched application software programs are increasingly becoming the target of attackers.”Not all human are perfect, we tend to make mistakes here and there. Since all software was written by human, it will not be 100% mistake free. All software is doom to have inherent flaws or room for improvement. When the manufacturers discover security flaws or bugs, they will make enhancements to programs and release updates. Thus, updating ensures that the user is using the most current and bug free version of the software. With the most current and bug free software, it increase the difficulties for attack to attack the user’s system, minimise the chance of losing important information.

After going through the hands-on project I managed to get my Adobe Flash Player 10.X updated to the latest version. I might not realize this software has an update if not because of Secunia Online Software Inspector. Overall this is a user friendly application. I had learnt an easy way to keep my programs and software updated.
