Project 1-1: Automatically receive latest Security Information

Objectives:
To keep your computer secure, it is important to know the latest security threats. Instead of making constant visits to security Web sites and scanning the pages looking for information, a new approach automates this process and makes it easier to have the information delivered to you. RSS (“Really Simple Syndication”) is an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format for automatically retrieving content from a Web Page and delivering it to your browser.

Watch the video to understand more about RSS feed.

Reflection:
This hands-on project introduces Google Reader to read RSS Feed. Personally, I find this reader useful and convenient. Google Reader is a web-based RSS feed reader, it makes viewing more easily, we can sign up for free and it is accessible immediately. As compared to desktop-based readers which might require constant update and take up your computer memory space, web-based reader is definitely more convenient. As for useful, through watching the video on RSS: in plain English, I understand that RSS could check for the latest news and information from the websites that we, the users, have subscribed to and deliver it to the users. This would save a lot of time and hassle for us as we do not have to check back those websites constantly. I had tried out the Google Reader by subscribing to www.securityincite.com, it is pretty easy since I manage to under how it works in one try. I'm now able to receive the latest Security Information automatically. In future, I might subscribe to more such webs. After all, it is a very helpful application especially for lazy people like me.
